Syria’s economy has been heavily impacted by ongoing political conflicts and civil war since 2011. Before the war, Syria had a relatively stable economy with a GDP growth rate of around 4% per year. However, in recent years, the GDP has decreased significantly due to destruction and displacement caused by the war.

According to World Bank data from 2020, Syria’s GDP was estimated at $20.4 billion, making it the 137th largest economy in the world. The life expectancy in Syria is currently estimated at 72 years, which is slightly lower than the global average. The leading causes of death in Syria include heart disease, stroke, and respiratory infections.

Refugees and Displacement

The Syrian civil war has resulted in one of the largest humanitarian crises in recent history. According to UNHCR data from 2020, there are over 6.6 million internally displaced people within Syria, and over 5.5 million Syrian refugees living in neighboring countries.

The displacement crisis has put a strain on resources and infrastructure in neighboring countries, leading to economic and social challenges for both refugees and host communities.
