Other major ethnic groups include the Lao Theung (17.9%), Lao Sung (9.9%), Hmong (9%), Kuy (1.7%), and Khmu (1.2%). Additionally, various Tai-Kadai, Mon-Khmer, andethnic minority groups contribute to Laos’s rich cultural heritage. Lao culture is deeply intertwined with ethnicity, as evidenced by the existence of numerous festivals, ceremonies, and traditions observed by ethnic groups. Laos is a tolerant and peaceful country that acknowledges the importance of its multicultural society; the state has adopted numerous laws that promote cultural diversity and respect for minority rights.

Laos Religions

The majority of the population of Laos practices Theravada Buddhism. Approximately two thirds of Laotians primarily follow this faith, as Buddhism has been the principal religion since the 14th century. Roman Catholicism is a minority religion in Laos; it was introduced by French missionaries in the 19th century. Animist Vajrayana Buddhism is also practiced, particularly in the highlands. Small numbers of Muslim, Protestant, Hindu, and Baha'i followers are also present. Expression of any religion other than Theravada Buddhism is limited and discouraged, and the government awards greater support to Buddhist programs than to any other faith.

Groundwater supplies cover nearly 25% of all rural households in Laos.
