The Republic of Liberia is a country on the west coast of Africa. It is bordered by Guinea to the north, Sierra Leone to the west, and Cote d'Ivoire to the east. Liberia has a population of just over 4.5 million and covers approximately 43,000 square miles. It gained independence in 1847 and was founded by freed slaves who had fought in the American Revolution. Liberia is a multiethnic country with 16 different ethnic groups. The largest ethnic groups are the Kpelle, which make up about 20% of the population, and the Bassa, Gio, Kru, Grebo, Mano, Krahn, Gola, Gbandi, Loma, Mandingo, Kissi, Vai, Vele and Dei. Approximately 60% of the population is Protestant, 30% is Muslim and 10% are Catholic and of other faiths. Liberia is home to the largest group of Americo-Liberians, descendants of former African-American slaves who emigrated to Liberia in the 19th century, and are now a small percentage of the population. Liberia is also home to a small number of descendants of West Indies and Congolese immigrants.

The country is structured along ethical lines, and there is a recognition of tribal religions and of the Christian faith in the Constitution. Liberia also has 32 traditional African religions. These traditional religions have held significant roles for centuries in the history and culture of Liberians.
