Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday; here’s what’s open and closed for the holiday

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday celebrated across the nation. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in November 1983 making the King’s birthday a federal holiday and it was first celebrated in 1986. However, it wasn’t until 2000 before all 50 states made it a state government holiday, with strong resistance coming from Arizona, according to the National Constitution Center. In 1990, voters in Arizona rejected a referendum to recognize the holiday. It resulted in the NFL pulling the Super Bowl from Tempe and moving it to Southern California, the National Constitution Center says. Voters in Arizona approved the holiday two years later.
