National Connecticut Day

National Connecticut Day is an annual celebration held on August 10th, in honor of the Constitution State. This holiday is meant to commemorate the history, culture, and traditions of Connecticut and its people. In 2021, Connecticut celebrates its 377th birthday, making National Connecticut Day a unique recognition of the longstanding ties of the state’s past and present.

History of Connecticut

The history of National Connecticut Day reaches back to 1637, when it was founded by English settlers as the Connecticut Colony. Connecticut was originally part of the New England confederation formed in 1643, but in 1662, it declared its independence from England and became its own colony. In 1788 Connecticut became the fifth state to join the United States, and in 1789 it was officially admitted to the union.

The Connecticut Colony and the state have played an important role in the development of the country. Throughout the American Revolution, the state was a leader in trade, industrialization, and education. Notable figures such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Noah Webster, and Thomas Paine had a strong influence in Connecticut, and cities such as Norwich and New Haven were part of the rise of American manufacturing.

Celebrating National Connecticut Day

National Connecticut Day is celebrated in several different ways around the state. In many towns, local organizations and businesses come together to host special events to honor the anniversary.

One popular event is the Connecticut State Constitution Day Parade, held in Hartford every year on the 10th of August. This parade celebrates the contributions of the state’s forefathers, features musical performances, guest speakers, and shows of patriotism.

In other cities, local schools, libraries, and municipalities organize fun activities to commemorate the day. On this day, residents come together to honor Connecticut’s history and celebrate its culture with a range of events including arts and crafts, historical reenactments, live music, parades, and more.

Connecticut is also home to several popular tourist attractions that are part of National Connecticut Day celebrations. In New Haven, residents can enjoy a day at the renowned Yale University, which was founded in 1701. Residents in Litchfield can explore the amazing Gillette Castle, which was built in 1919 for Connecticut’s own William Gillette.

Connecting with the Past

No matter how you choose to celebrate National Connecticut Day, it is important to remember why it is so important. This holiday is a time to recognize the long history of the state and celebrate the spirit of the many people who helped shape it. From its contributions to the country’s founding to its beginnings as an independent colony, Connecticut is an integral part of American culture and history.

The state has a long and storied history, and National Connecticut Day is a great way to recognize and appreciate all the contributions it has made to our nation. Connecticut is proud of its past and will continue to celebrate the anniversary of its admission to the United States for many years to come.

New state bill seeks to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning at ice rinks

New state bill seeks to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning at ice rinks

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Western New York state lawmaker is seeking tougher health and safety rules for ice rinks, particularly when it comes to preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. State Assemblywoman Monica Wallace wants rink operators to be required to maintain air quality devices and document air quality results. This comes after over 100 people, including children, were affected by carbon monoxide poisoning in December at Holiday Twin Rinks in Cheektowaga. If the law is passed, penalties for not keeping up on air quality could lead to fines upwards of $2,000. Ice arenas would also need to be inspected by a public health official and get a certificate of acceptable air quality. “Every year, dozens of people become sick from…

Discounts in October and November removed the excitement and urgency of Black Friday. “People have already got what they want,” David Klink, senior analyst at Huntington Private Bank, which owns shares of Walmart and Target. “There are only so many big screen TVs and Alexa [Amazon voice assistants] you can buy.”…

St. John’s performs better in victory over Fordham

St. John’s was looking to check a lot of boxes on Saturday when it faced Fordham at the Garden in its final tune-up before Big East play begins. A bunch definitely got checked. Others seemed open to interpretation. Led by Joel Soriano’s 20 points and 10 rebounds, the Red Storm led wire-to-wire in posting a 77-55 Holiday Festival victory over the Rams before 12,720. They got back in the win column after last weekend’s disappointing loss to Boston College and got a taste of winning at the Garden that they will need with six more big games and the conference tournament scheduled to be played on that floor. They also made some much-needed strides with their defense, answering coach Rick…
